  • Across the world, senior managers and team leaders are increasingly frustrated by conflicts arising from what we refer to as multiteaming—having their people assigned to multiple projects simultaneously. But given the significant benefits of multiteaming, it has become a way of organizational life, particularly in knowledge work. It allows groups to share individuals’ time and brainpower across functional and departmental lines, and it increases efficiency as well. Multiteaming also provides important pathways for knowledge transfer and the dissemination of best practices throughout organizations. While the advantages of multiteaming are clear and quantifiable, its costs are substantial and need to be managed – from overlapping teams of independent projects to weakened group cohesion, identity, and trust due to fluctuation of team members, not to mention the stress, fatigue, and burnout experienced by individual employees. All around, it’s a significant investment of time and effort. But organizations pay a much higher price when they neglect the costs of multiteaming in hot pursuit of its benefits. In this masterclass, Mark will discuss why multiteaming is so prevalent in today’s economy, examine the key problems that crop up for organizational and team leaders, and provide recommendations for how to solve them based on his research spanning 15 years.

  • We live in a world of digital disruption, where established firms need to rethink both how they compete and how they are organised. In this talk, Professor Birkinshaw will describe the new models of organising that are taking shape today, and how these are helping firms deliver on the imperatives for decisive action and emotional conviction. He will also talk about the leadership qualities that are needed as digital technology, and AI in particular, makes many of the traditional parts of the leader’s job obsolete.

  • This Masterclass is a deep dive into the methods and personal qualities needed to make innovation happen in the business world today. Professor Birkinshaw will discuss the typical obstacles to innovation that established firms all face, then he will describe a structured way to tackle whatever ’innovation challenge’ you are currently working on. In particular, he will emphasise the human aspects of the innovation process, and the need to sometimes rise above the formal process and even break the rules, as a way of getting things done. This Masterclass is brought to you by Tandem HR.

  • “We have always done it this way.” “It’s too risky.” There are many reasons for an organization not to change and fall prey to its own inertia. Your experience may even validate that only 30% of transformations succeed. At Novartis we knew unleashing the power of our people was critical to future success. Before asking our employees to embrace change, we decided to embrace change first and rethink our approach based on current research in behavioural science, a design thinking approach, and generally a less hierarchical take on leadership.
